Advice on the proper use of devices

Purchasing and using a device

As a patient or user, you can purchase a number of devices (e.g. bandages, compresses) directly from stores, pharmacies or online.
Before purchase and use, here are a few tips for the safe and efficient purchase and use of a device.

Before purchase (if possible)

  • Check with your healthcare professional that the device is suitable for your needs and medical condition.
  • Check that the packaging is undamaged.
  • Check that the device has a CE marking (except in special cases such as custom-made devices).
  • Check that user information is available in all three national languages (packaging, instructions for use or any other document supplied with the device).
  • Check that the contact details of the manufacturer and authorised representative (if applicable) are given on the device and/or its packaging and in the instructions for use.
  • Check the use-by date (if applicable) (see info sheet pictograms to identify information).

In case of doubt, contact your healthcare professional to verify the information.

Before use

  • Comply with the storage conditions for the device between purchase and first use(s) (see symbol factsheet, refer to the instructions for use and, if necessary, ask for advice from your healthcare professional).
  • Check that the device has not expired by checking the use-by date.
  • Check the condition of the various components (device(s) and any accessory(ies)).
  • Make sure you have everything you need to use the device properly (battery, test strip, etc.).
  • Make sure you understand how to use the device by following the manufacturer's recommendations. To do this, refer to the instructions for use, the manufacturer's website and, if necessary, ask for advice from your healthcare professional.

After use

  • Continue to comply with the storage conditions for the device (see symbol factsheet, refer to the instructions for use and, if necessary, ask for advice from your healthcare professional).
  • Keep a record of your maintenance history (if applicable).
  • Consult the information on device disposal and shelf life after opening (if applicable).
  • Identify the serial number and/or batch code and, if applicable, the UDI (unique device identifier). In case of an incident, you can report this information to the FAMHP.

For more information

  • For general questions or minor incidents, contact your healthcare professional and/or the manufacturer directly. The manufacturer's contact details are given in the instructions for use/packaging supplied with the device.
  • For all reports of serious incidents, notify the FAMHP via your healthcare professional who will be able to help you. Consult the factsheet "What should I report as a citizen/patient?" (FR/NL).
  • If you have any questions about the use of a device, please send an e-mail to patient.meddev@afmps.be.
